Hluboká nad Vltavou was originally built as a castle but went through several reconstructions. The first written record of the castle was in 1290, when Záviš of Falknštejn was executed beneath its fortifications for alleged high treason. Hluboká belonged to the Schwarzenberg Dynasty from 1661. At first, they had the manor rebuilt into the Baroque style, and in the 19th century, they rebuilt the castle in Romantic, Neo-Gothic style in the spirit of Windsor Castle in England.
Today, the former riding hall contains the Aleš’s South Bohemian Gallery featuring exhibitions of Gothic paintings and sculptures and exhibitions of Dutch and Flemish artists from the 17th and 18th centuries. It also features special exhibitions in the main hall. Here you will also find an extraordinary exhibition of armory.
